Post-flood diseases claim 33 in Nalbari, Sivasagar

NALBARI, July 27 ? Altogether 33 people have lost their lives in Nalbari and Sivasagar districts due to various water-borne diseases during the floods. Following improvement in the flood situation in Nalbari district, water-borne diseases like diarrhoea, dysentery and fever have assumed alarming proportions and so far claimed at least 15 lives in different parts of the worst flood-affected areas. However, official sources confirmed only five death cases in the district.

The confirmed deaths have been reported one each from Sariahtali, Hati-Namati, Kamarkuchi, Charia atc. while two persons died of fever at Sondha. The other eight deaths have been reported from Tamulpur, Barama, Kaithalkuchi, Amoni. Ghograpar and char areas of Mukulmua circle. In Nalbari, about 500 people are undergoing treatment at different local PHCs.

Our Sivasagar Correspondent adds : Viral encephalitis has, till Monday, claimed 12 lives in Sivasagar district while six more died of gastro-enteritis, Dr Ilu Boruah, Jt Director, Health, told The Assam Tribune today. Barring the death of a nine-year-old girl at Aphala village in Desungmukh of gastroenteritis, the other cases are not related to flood, the Jt Director said.

The encephalitis victims were Anil Gowala (10) Borhat TE, Namoni Murha (20) Kane TE, Navajit Tanti (8) Hingryan, Rina Layak (10) Hatipati, Majoni Kurmi (18) Borsila, Hiteswar Chetia (12) Athkhel, Manu Hatimuria (1) Mautgaon, Bobi Chetia (10) Lakwa, Bijoy Bhumij (6) Rajmai TE, Subarna Chetia (54) Mogarahat, Sushen Chetia (76) Hanhchora and Biju Boruah (49) Melachakar, Sivasagar. Altogether 35 persons have been affected by encephatitis in the district. Gastro deaths have been repoted from Na-phuk TE ?2 , Suffry TE ? 2, Taokok TE ? 1 and Aphala-1. Unofficial sources however claim that the death toll till yesterday was 26 in the district.
