Probe into Kokrajhar killings ordered

KOKRAJHAR, Feb 3 — The State government has ordered a magisterial enquiry into the brutal killings of five villagers in Kokrajhar district yesterday. Meanwhile, the Minister of State for Home, Sri Pradyut Bordoloi accompanied by Lower Assam Commissioner, Sri P P Verma visited the area to take stock of the situation. Sri Bordoloi assured the people that the State government would take all possible steps to find out the fact.

Today, hundreds of people in the locality took out a procession with playcards and demanded punishment against the people involved in the brutal killings. They also alleged that the State government had failed completely to provide security to the common people. The agitated processionists urged the State government to pay adequate compensation to the bereaved family members.

On the other hand, the All Assam Nepali Students Union (AANSU) and the Assam Gorkha Sanmilan have expressed deep concern at the killings of innocent villagers and demanded Rs 10-lakh compensation to the victims’ family members. It may be mentioned here that the villagers were picked up by Army on Friday night and shot them dead from close range. The killings have created a panic situation among the local people.

The village located along the Indo-Bhutan border of late has been witnessing a series of violence perperated by the militants for which Army operations were launched to contain them. Meanwhile All Assam Nepali Students’ Union and the All Assam Gorkha Sanmilani has given a call for a 12-hour Kokrajhar district bandh on February 5 in protest against the killing. The ABSU has also extended support to the bandh.
