Protest against militant excesses in Nagaland

DIMAPUR, Oct 20 ? Hundreds of students took to the streets at the district headquarter town of Phek in Nagaland on Monday. This time too, it was to register their voice against the excesses by some of the cadres of underground groupes.

The students from different educational institutions were protesting against the September 22 incident in particular and patrolling of Naga underground groups in civilian areas with full combat uniform and arms in general.

Chakhesang Students Union (CSU) officials said that on September 22, a Class B student of Chokri Baptist School Chetheba was shot while he was on his way to school. Another two students at Government High School Boys? Hostel, Chetheba were physically assaulted and an elderly man was mercilessly beaten and two-school building at Chesezu were fired at and damaged by cadres of NSCN-IM, said the CSU.

Simillar protests were held all over Chakhesang areas, condemning the armed cadres for targeting educational institutions and innocent school students. It also questioned their intention as to why the innocent students ?who have promising future be made a target of the national workers who claim to have brightened vision and commitments to work for the aspiration of the people?.

The protesters strongly stressed that underground groups should stand committed to their ?national goals and defend the nation? and its people ?rather than indulge in fratricidal killings and factional war of supremacy?.

The rallies held in several towns, also appealed to all the factions to move out of populated areas without any further delay.

The rally adopted the following resolutions: (a) Patrolling in full combat uniforms in the civil populated areas be immediately stop (b) Resolved to condemn all kinds of factional fights for supremacy (C) Condemned the attack targeted on the innocent students and educational institutions by the cadres of NSCN-IM.

It may be mentioned here that recently, cadres of NSCN-IM and FGN clashed in Lasumi village under the Pfutsero subdivision of the Phek district, which resulted not only into the killing of two but it left several houses in the village destroyed.
