NEW DELHI, March 11: Setting all speculations to rest, the BJP today admitted that the ruling AGP had sent feelers to the central leadership with alliance proposals. The talks, however, did not progress, said former Union Minister of State, Kabindra Purkayastha. The former minister's revelation came, even as a six-member delegation of the AGP led by Chief Minister, Prafulla Kumar Mahanta arrived here this evening. Though Mahanta's visit was a scheduled one, the other ministers including Chandra Mohan Patowary, Pradip Hazarika and Shaidul Alam Choudhury, joined in at the last hour, triggering speculations. According to sources, soon after his arrival in the evening, the Chief Minister held a close door meeting with all of his ministerial and party colleagues at the Assam Bhawan that continued late into the night. The AGP leaders, however, dismissed reports that they were planning to call on the top BJP leaders soliciting their intervention. The Chief Minister told The Assam Tribune that there was no question of the AGP contacting the BJP now, as the have already decided against having any alliance. "Our old alliance with the Left parties would continue and few more new ones including one faction of the ASDC and a Bodo political group would be added," he disclosed. Meanwhile, the BJP state leaders revealed that three prominent AGP members including an MP had called on the general secretary of the BJP in-charge for Northeast, Sunil Shastri claiming that they had been authorised by the party to talk to the BJP. The talks, however, did not progress and we have not heard from them since," added Purkayastha, who declined to reveal the names of the three AGP representatives. The BJP state leaders including Union Minister of State for Water Resources, Bijoya Chakravorty, told newsmen there was no possibility of the party now overruling the decision that had been taken. Both the leaders were reacting to reports that an AGP delegation led by the Chief Minister had requested the Prime Minister and the Union Home Minister to review their decision. Meanwhile, the Chief Minister today left for Mumbai to inaugurate the Assam House project tomorrow.
