Regional meet on identification of research areas on women

GUWAHATI, Nov 1?A Regional Consultation on Identification of Research Areas on Women, organised by the National Institute of Public Cooperation and Child Development, New Delhi, got under way today at its regional centre, Guwahati.

The Regional Consultation is being organised with the objectives of identifying gaps in researches on women?s issues in the region, determining priority areas of research, examining methodological issues and to draw a plan for networking amongst research institutions and developing a plan of action for carrying out researches on women of the region. About 40 academicians from different universities and institutions, social workers and activists of the region, are attending the programme, according to a press release.

The consultation meet was inaugurated by Prof G N Talukdar, vice-chancellor, Gauhati University. As the chief guest P K Bhattacharjee, Regional Director, NIPCCD, Guwahati, welcomed the guests and delegates. K K Singh, Joint Director, NIPCCD, New Delhi, briefly discussed the genesis of the Consultation, its objectives and the follow-up plan on the outcome of the Consultation.

Dr Talukdar while inaugurating the Consultation, expressed that academicians in universities are very much interested to get involved with the exercise of determining priority areas of research on women in the context of the region in particular and the nation as a whole.

He appreciated the efforts initiated by the Department of Women and Child Development Govt of India, and NIPCCD in this regard and emphasised that linking researches on women with policies of the government for empowerment of women is essential. Dr Talukdar opined that as of now researches on women are mainly conducted by the academicians belonging to universities and similar institutions, and there is always a possibility of some gaps between the studies undertaken by these researchers and the policy issues of the government in terms of focus and scope of these studies.

Dr S C Joshi, faculty member of NIPCCD, Guwahati offered the vote of thanks. The Consultation will come to an end tomorrow, according to a press release.
