Rights panel takes up priests' attack cases

IMPHAL, February 9: The Manipur Human Rights Commission has taken up a suo motu case in connection with the attack on Father Tommy Manjali at the Canchipur Catholic School, on February 2 by unidentified persons. The commission issued notices to the Principal Secretary, Home and DGP, seeking reports of the incident and progress of the investigations. The reports should be submitted before February 26 and the next day is fixed for further orders. The commission received a report from the Under Secretary Home in connection with the killing of Father Jacob by unknown gunmen at Sugnu on December 2 last year. The report was submitted after the commission has taken up the suo motu case. The report said that the Sugnu police station registered a case and investigations are on. It also mentioned that the PM examination report is pending. The Commission asked the DGP to give reasons for not getting the post mortem report. The report is to be submitted by March 1 and fixed the next day for further orders, a commission source said.
