Rs 6.42 cr for police modernisation in Tripura from '95-2000'

AGARTALA, February 28: state government has received Rs 6.42 crore for police modernisation from 1995-96 to 1999-2000. Other than that the state government has also received ammunition and devices worth Rs 18.26 crore. Chief Minister, Manik Sarkar who is also in charge of the Home department, in a written answer said this to Congress MLA Ratan Lal Nath's question. In another answer to the question of TUJS, MLA, Ratimohan Jamatia, the Chief Minister said, from January 1, 1998 to December 31, 2000, police arrested 270 militants and 1051 collaborators. At the same time, 85 police personnel were killed in encounters with militant and 58 injured. In reply to Billal Mian's question, the Chief Minister said, 56 persons belonging to the families of the policemen killed in encounters were provided jobs on compassionate ground in either police or home guards. Though no plans are there to provide jobs to the families of central paramilitary personnel, the state government provides Rs 2 lakh if killed in encounter or Rs 1 lakh in case of death for other reasons. During the fourth Left Front rule, 105 militants have so far surrendered to the State administration, of whom 21 were NLFT militants, 66 TTCF, 4 ATTF, 3 TNSF and 11 NMF militants. Out of them 73 surrendered militants were granted subsistence allowances, one time financial assistance to 90 militants and government jobs to 3 militants.
