Rush for BSNL mobiles abates in Mizo capital

Aizawl, Feb. 9: The number of potential BSNL cellphone users declined drastically today, just two days after the mobile service provider opened its door to the public. When the BSNL started giving out application forms for mobile phone connections here on Saturday, the rush was so great that people were queuing up outside its office, even blocking traffic.

Today, however, was a completely different story, as the expected rush did not come when the doors were opened. A trickle of people coming in for the forms was the only sign that the BSNL was about to launch cellular services in the state.

A BSNL official said approximately 2,000 forms have been given out. ?We had hoped for much more, but the initial enthusiasm seems to have died down on Sunday. It is very disappointing,? he added.

The Press has been allotted 40 connections. However, a newsman, when asked whether he was going to apply for the mobile connection, said he would rather wait till the complaints come in and the BSNL authorities rectify them.

A government officer said the main trouble with the BSNL mobile connection was the post-paid regime. ?People cannot afford the post-paid system as they need to shell out hundreds of rupees every month. This is especially true for people who have land lines,? he added.

Initially, the BSNL had expected nearly 8,000 applications for the 2,600 connections slated for this city. In that case, it had intended to draw a lottery for the connections. However, with only about 2,000 applications for 2,600 lines, it would seem pointless now, a source said.

However, with the BSNL allocating connections to the Press and government, which sources said could be over 1,000 connections, a lottery draw for the public may still be necessary.

Moreover, application forms can be obtained till tomorrow and a heavy rush could occur again. BSNL has scheduled drawing of the lottery for February 23 and the mobile service activation for February 26.

BSNL officials also denied rumours circulating here that they will allow only mobile phones manufactured by LG Electronics. They said anyone can use any kind of mobile handset of any make.
