Samata, MSCP file nomination papers

IMPHAL, April 18: Two candidates have so far filed nomination papers for the byelections to the 4-Kshetrigao Assembly constituency, scheduled to be held on May 11 next. Vivek Raj Wangkhem, son, of late Wangkhem Basantakumar, who held the seat before his demise earlier this year, filed his, nomination papers this morning at around 11:10 am before the SDO, Porompat, who is acting as returnng officer. He is contesting as a candidate of the Samata Party. A second candidate, Wahengbam. Hemanta, representing the MSCP, has also filed his nomination, papers. While Pheirenjao Kabui was the proposer for Vivek Raj Wangkhem's candidature, one, Maibam Gogendro proposed W Hemanta's candidature. The byelections to the constituency was necessitated by the death of Vivek Raj Wangkhem's father, Basantakumar Wangkhem, who held the seat as a Samata Party candidate. Sources said a few more candidates are likely to emerge in the next few days. The last date of filing nomination papers has been fixed as April 24. Scrutiny will take place the next day, and candidates will be allowed to withdraw their candidature till April 27. Altogether 23,828 voters will exercise their franchise in the byelection at 30 polling stations in the constituency.
