TINSUKIA, May 13–The Asom Gana Parishad candidate for the Dibrugarh Lok Sabha seat has created history in Assam politics by winning the Dibrugarh seat. This Parliamentary seat has never been threatened to be taken away from the Congress Party since Independence. But as analyzed in the pre poll analysis due to the presence of the Bharatiya Janata Party candidate Sri Kamakhya Prasad Tasha in the fray and some other important issues in the constituency affected the Congress candidate none other than the president of the state unit of the party, Sri Paban Singh Ghatowar.
Sarbananda Sonowal bagged the seat by defeating his nearest rival Sri Tasha of BJP. In the meantime all over the constituency, workers and supporters of AGP are celebrating the victory by rallying out in thousands on the streets of all the towns and townships of both Dibrugarh and Tinsukia district. The celebration has doubly been fortified as Dr Arun Sharma, the gentleman politician of AGP too won the Lakhimpur seat that covers three Legislative Constituencies namely Doomdooma, Sadhiya and Chabua of the two districts of the south bank of the river Brahmaputra by defeating his rival Smt Rani Narah, the Congress candidate, in a triangular contest in which the other forerunner was Sri Uday Shankar Hazarika of BJP.
In the case of Sri Sonowal it was the presence of Sri Tasha, the BJP candidate who bagged a large number of votes especially from the Congress vote banks i.e. from the ten garden and the urban areas which helped him in Tinsukia district, Sri Tasha bagged 32,637, 22,637 and 32,181 votes in Tinsukia, Digboi and Margherita LACs respectively. In these constituencies, Sri Ghatowar bagged 19,067, 19,489 and 29,733 votes respectively and on the other hand, Sri Sonowal bagged 15,035, 14,700 and 19,927 respectively. Interestingly, all thee constituencies are being represented by Congress MLAs. This division of Congress votes of which major chunks were polled by the BJP candidate has helped Sri Sonowal to dethrone the four-time winner Sri Ghatowar.
Dr Sharma too has been helped by the BJP in the Doomdooma constituency where BJP bagged the largest chunk of votes in the form of 23,964 votes and he and Congress candidate bagged 13,314 and 14,402 respectively. However, the Sadiya constituency which is being represented by Sri Jagadish Bhuyan of AGP has as expected helped him to amass a large number votes amounting to 34,119 votes, whereas in this constituency BJP and Congress candidates bagged 14,879 and 20,804 votes.
