Security stepped up in Meghalaya for KSU stir

SHILLONG, March 5? The Meghalaya Government has tightened security measures in the State in view of the call for picketing of all State and Central government offices and financial institutions by the Khasi Students? Union (KSU) on March 6-7. Expressing great concern over the KSU move, the government said such activities will pose a threat to maintenance of law and order and a disturbance to public peace and tranquility at a time when HSLC and ICSC examinations are going on. Viewing such activities as ?highly uncalled for?, an official press note said ?Since the KSU is now a political party, they should include the issues and demands raised by them in their party manifesto in the coming elections. The Government is firmly committed to maintaining law and order in the State.? Asking employees to attend duties on the days of picketing, the State government warned ?disciplinary action will be taken against government employees who absent themselves from duty and ?no work no pay? principle shall be strictly enforced?. The KSU gave the picketing call in demand for sacking of the top officials of the Meghalaya Board of Secondary Education (MBOSF) and resumption of talks with the government on its 10-point charter of demands. Meanwhile, the district administration of East Khasi Hills has promulgated prohibitory orders banning picketing and causing obstruction to movement of people throughout the district.
