Silchar REC upgraded as National Institute of Technology

SILCHAR, July 12 ? The Regional Engineering College (REC) of Silchar has got the status of National Institute of Technology (NIT). Informing this, the Principal of the College, Col. (retd) JS Virk, said that a new Board of Governors will be constituted soon by the Ministry of Human Resource Development. He also informed that the post of Principal will be upgraded as Director. It can be mentioned here that the Silchar REC was established in the year 1967. It was under Gauhati University till the establishment of Assam University in 1994. The detailed project report regarding the upgradation of REC was sent by the present Principal, Virk on November, 2000, and on the basis of this report, the Government of India sent a high-level expert team after one year. After getting report from the team, the Ministry of HRD took the decision to upgrade the college into NIT. An all-religious prayer meeting was organised on July 3 on the occasion of its upgradation.
