IMPHAL, April 6: Prominent theatre personalities of the country are going to join hands to discuss the topic, "Theatre economics in the last 50 years' at the capital of this border State during the year-long celebration of 'Chorus Repertory Theatre for its silver jubilee, which starts from tomorrow. Announcing this to a crowded press conference here at the premises of the Chorus Repertory theatre this morning, former director of the National Schools of Drama (NSD) and director of theatre Ratan and Thiyam said "theatre is nowadays becoming one of the dying performing arts in India." The noted theatre personality Ratan Thiyam also urged the Union government to set up a national platform in the line of National Film Division Corporation, (NFDC) to uplift the activities of the professional theatre artistes of the country. The director Thiyam, said that prominent theatre personalities like Sanjana Kapoor, K Raina, Kanishka Sen, Sudhesna and Ramkumar Bajaj who is the director of NSD will also arrive here tomorrow to take part in the silver jubilee celebration. He however hinted that April 11 will be the most important day of the year-long celebration wherein the famous play "Uttarpriyadarshi" will be staged before the State Governor Ved Marwah and Secretary of Culture, Government of India, Governor and Secretary, Culture will be the chief guest and president of the formal inauguration of the newly constructed play-house "The Shrine", one of the most beautiful playhouses in the entire country, located at Shamushang Uku along the Uripok Kangchup road in Imphal west district. Mention may be made here that Chorus Repertory Theatre was established in April 1976 and so far 37 popular plays were produced under the direction of internationally acclaimed Ratan Thiyam. The latest product of the company was the Birds, which was produced in 1999. With outstanding performances in many international festivals in India and abroad, Chorus Repertory Theatre has earned prestigious awards from various foreign countries since 1987.
