GUWAHATI, April 17 ? The residents of Borjhar area near the city?s LGB Airport are very much resentful of the apathy shown by the authorities concerned towards the problems of sanitation, illegal construction and a spurt in the criminal activities in the area. Slaughter houses flourishing in the area in violation of the set norms have also posed a serious threat to the LGB Airport which has only recently been linked to the international airways. Anyday, birds of prey may cause serious mishap by hitting any of the flights taking off from or landing in the LGB Airport, because of the irresponsible way the slaughter house owners are behaving, said some of scared residents of the locality. Moreover, foreign tourists who are expected to come to the State in growing number because of the new air linkage, will be frustrated seeing the condition of the surroundings of the LGB Airport, they argued. The authorities concerned have not displayed any sign of eagerness to improve the condition of the markets and roads of the area, nor there is any attempt at checking the illegal construction activities along the road leading to the Airport. The cattle from the nearby villages are also allowed to be grazed freely even on the road, thus inviting a hazard not warranted in an Airport of international status. There should be a concerted move to urgently spruce up the entire area and in the long run to develop it as a model township, the residents suggested, warning however, against any evasive move.
