JORHAT, June 6 — Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today said that a special package for surrendered ULFA militants will soon be sanctioned by the Centre, reports PTI. “There are at present more than 7000 surrendered militants in the State and I am happy to announce that there will be a special rehabilitation package for them very soon,” Gogoi told reporters here. The Chief Minister said that during his recent visit to New Delhi, Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh had assured him that those who come forward to surrender will be rehabilitated.
“The Prime Minister had a very positive attitude to solve the problem of insurgency in the State and we hope that all pending issues will be soon sorted out,” he added. Gogoi further urged all underground militants to come forward for negotiations as the new government is very keen to end this long-standing problem facing the State.
“The talks can be in this country or any other country but by all means the militants should come forward for talks and join the mainstream,” he said. The special rehabilitation scheme includes special recruitment drive in the Army and other avenues for self-employment. Gogoi further said that with the help of the Congress-led UPA government at the Centre, there will be much more development in the State.
