GUWAHATI, March 20: Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) MS Gill, on the second day of his three-day visit to Assam to review preparations for the forthcoming Assembly elections, had discussions with various organisations and individuals at the Circuit House here today. The CEC met representatives and received memoranda from organisations like All Assam Students' Union (AASU), All Assam Minority Students' Union (AAMSU), Sadou Asam Karmachari Parishad (SAKP), All Assam Lawyers' Association (AALA), Assam Sikshak Karmachari Samannaya Samity (ASKSS), Cotton College Centenary Celebration Committee (CCCCC), Northeast Congress Coordination Committee, Assam and Farmers' Association, etc. Meeting the CEC today, the AASU made it clear that the existing State electoral rolls were not acceptable to it alleging that the names of illegal immigrants were included in it. A delegation of the union impressed upon Gill that while names of lakhs of illegal immigrants were present in the electoral rolls, that of genuine citizens were excluded. Stating that Assam needed special attention, AASU called for a special effort by the Election Commission in this regard. The SAKP requested the CEC to ensure proper security to poll staff.
