Students stage dharna against attack on AMSU chief

IMPHAL, January 19: Hundreds of students today staged sit in protest at all main roads of the city against the attack on AMSU president Kh Gourashyam by unidentified gunmen inside the AMHU HQ located at the campus of DM College on January 17. Gourashyam who is also the president of the Manipur University Students' Union, MUSU, is recuperating at the JN Hospital security ward. Doctors had declared him stable. Sit in protests were held near Johnstone Higher Secondary School, Chingmeirong Khongnang Ani Karak, Singjamei, Wangkhei and in front of Human Resource Development Academy, Ghari and Little Flowers School. Students put up placards written with words "Why AMSU president was attacked", "Students are the pillars of the nation", "AMSU is for all", "We want peace and unity", " AMSU is not anti-social" and "Students decry attack" during the dharna. Sources from AMSU HQs said that the dharna might continue tomorrow also. Meanwhile, a meeting of AMSU units, branches and committees in connection with the attack on its president was held at the AMSU office this morning. The meeting presided by vice-president Tejmani discussed the future course of action of the student's body. A meeting of former presidents, secretaries and advisors of the Union will also be held at 2 pm tomorrow. Meanwhile, Zeliangrong Students Union Manipur, Manipur University Tribal Students' Union and other several organisations have condemned the attack. The organisations have appealed to check the recurrences of such incidents in future. Meanwhile AMSU in a statement expressed gratitude to all the students for lending their unstinted support and for staging the sit-in-protest. The student body reiterated that it will go forward unhindered with its activities and added that it will take up future course of actions.
