Tight security for NSCN leaders

KOHIMA, Dec 13 ? Amidst tight security, top leaders of the NSCN-IM are arriving in Dimapur tomorrow in their second visit to Nagaland in two years to hold consultation with different groups in an attempt to find a lasting solution to the Naga political problem, reports PTI.

Security measures have been beefed up around NSCN-IM?S camp at Hebron, near Dimapur, where the two leaders Chairman Issac Chieshi Swu and general secretary Th. Muivah would be staying, and along the road from the airport to the camp, official sources said.

They, however, said once the leaders arrived in the camp, it would be the responsibility of the cadres to provide them security. A public reception will be accorded to the two leaders by the apex tribal council Naga Hoho and Dimapur-based Naga Council and some Naga NGOs and churches immediately. Swu and Muivah had arrived in New Delhi on December 5 and met central leaders and leaders of different political parties last week in a bid to take the peace process forward.

Meanwhile, the NSCN?s Khaplang faction today in a statement announced halting of ?all military operations? from December 5 to allow people to celebrate Christmas and the New Year. ?We believe in the spirit of fraternity and inseparable bond among Nagas in the celebration of the Christmas,? the statement said.

Official sources said the main worry for the police and Assam Rifles was how to ensure confinement of the cadre from rival groups to the designated camps and prevention of infiltration of Assam and Manipur militants during the visit of the leaders.

Various political parties and Naga NGOs have welcomed the visit. The NPCC congratulated the UPA government and NSCN-IM leadership for creating a conducive atmosphere for holding talks.
