AGARTALA, June 25 – The flood situation in Tripura took a turn for the worse with the death toll rising to three even as many villages were inundated, rendering thousands of people homeless, official sources said. The Assam-Agartala national highway, considered to be the lifeline of Tripura, was cut-off from rest of the country due to landslides and waterlogging at Ranirbazar in West Tripura district while Sai Radhanagar, Subhashnagar, Katakhal and Orient Chowmuhani areas remained waterlogged.
The Subdivisional Magistrate (SDM) of Sadar, Sambhu Nama said 1,500 people of 300 families were displaced and have taken shelter in different government buildings and relief camps opened by the administration. Two children drowned in Raisyabari in Dhalai district where vast areas were waterlogged due to the swollen Raima river which is flowing much above the danger level.
One person was washed away by swollen Khowai river at Teliamura in West Tripura earlier. Official sources said 15 mud houses collapsed at Kalacherri and neighbouring villages due to heavy rain in the district and the debris was washed away river Manu.
Meanwhile, Gomati, the largest river in the state was flowing much above the danger level in Udaipur, the district town of South Tripura and Sonamura, a subdivisional town in West Tripura district rendering thousands of people homeless.
