Violence claims 491 lives since May: Gogoi

GUWAHATI, March 9 ? Contrary to the loud claim of the newly elected Congress Government about ?fast improvement? of law and order situation in the State, altogether 491 persons were killed in violent incidents in the State during the period from May 2001 to January 2002. Chief Minister, Tarun Gogoi in reply to unstarred question raised by AGP MLA, Jagadish Bhuyan informed the State Assembly today that out of these 491 killed in the State since his Government took over the mantle, 205 were civilians, 72 were police or para-military force personnel and 214 were militants belonging to different outfits. The Chief Minister also rabled the lists of all the slain persons before the House.

In response to the same question, the Chief Minister further informed that during the same period in 1996-97 when AGP was in power, altogether 318 persons were killed in violent incidents related to insurgency in the State. Out of those 238 were common citizens, 55 police or para-military force personnel and 25 militants. In reply to a starred question of AGP legislator, Zoii Nath Sharma, the Chief Minister informed the House that during the period from January 2001 to February 2002, 41 police personnel, 32 para-military force personnel and 15 Armymen were killed in the State by militants while 59 policemen, 45 para-military force personnel and 12 Armymen were injured in the same period.

The Chief Minister further informed that during the same period militants gunned down total 308 common citizens and injured 259 others in the State. The security forces operating in the State also killed 342 militants and injured 18 others in the State during the period besides apprehending 1012 militants. In a written reply to another question raised by AGP legislator Dilip Kumar Saikia, the Chief Minister informed the House that after his Government took charge in the State on May 18, last year till March 4 this year 356 incidents of rape, 348 incidents of dacoity, 328 incidents of extortion and 387 incidents of loot were reported in the State. During the same period, 20 incidents of rape, 36 dacoity, 72 loot and 51 incidents of extortion were registered in Guwahati city.
