Woman slaps Rs 5 lakh suit against Manipur govt

IMPHAL, February 19: In a sensational case, a woman has filed a petition against the State Government seeking Rs 5 lakhs as compensation attributing the death of her husband to the Government's (School Education Directorate) failure to pay advance medical expenses. The petitioner Thambal Bibi of Lilong Turel Ahanbi filed the case before the Gauhati High Court Imphal Bench. The deceased husband Md Badaruddin Shah who was working as assistant teacher in the Lilong Mayai Turel Ahanbi Primary Madrassa had kidney failure. Khaidem Mani who appeared in favour of the petitioner said that Badaruddin sought Rupees four lakhs as medical advance from the Education Department (School) for transplanting his kidney on June 19 last year. The authorities also agreed to sanction the amount after the Medical Board recommended his treatment at CMC Hospital Vellore, the counsel said. As the Government failed to release the amount, Badaruddin died at RIMS Hospital on Sept 23 last. In today's proceedings, the Government (Education-S) filed an affidavit through the Government counsel stating that it would pay about Rs 3,20,000 to the petitioner. After perusing it, the court headed by Justice NS Singh asked the Government to consider the matter based on it within one month.
