SHILLONG, June 16 – Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga, who was a ‘negotiator’ between the Centre and several underground outfits in the North-east for talks during the NDA regime, today said he was ready to offer his services to continue the process, if invited, reports PTI.
“If my service is needed, I will be glad to offer it for the good of the country...But I don’t like to be an uninvited guest,” Zoramthanga told reporters before flying to New Delhi. He said the present Congress-led Government had not discussed the issue with him so far. Asked if he would take up the matter during his meeting with the central leaders, Zoramthanga, who was here to attend a review meeting of the HRD ministry’s programmes, evaded a direct reply saying the continuation of the peace process depended on the union government and the insurgents. “The two have to make a decision,” he said.
Stating that he had met some of the insurgent outfits of the region and achieved success to some extent, Zoramthanga said: “In some cases something more needs to be done to arouse confidence into them about the central government.” “Mutual confidence about each other is the first medicine and without it no peace process is successful,” he said. Commenting on the alleged violation of ceasefire agreement by the NSCN-IM, Zoramthanga said he was only instrumental to bring them to the table. “I am not their commander,” he commented.
