SHILLONG, March 15 ? Suspected NSCN (IM) and Achik National Volunteer Council (ANVC) militants struck again today killing three policemen and two civilians in an ambush in West Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya. The incident took place barely two kms from the Indo-Bangladesh border confirming fears of security forces that extremist outfits in the North East are actively operating on either side of the international border. Briefing newsmen, State DGP L Sailo disclosed that the victims, travelling in a privately-owned Shaktiman truck were totally taken by surprise when the militants opened fire on the vehicle from both sides of the jungle-covered road at Alekgreng. The ambush left a policeman and a girl injured. They were both rushed to the civil hospital here for treatment. The ultras snatched three self-loading rifles and 150 rounds of ammunition from the slain policemen. They have been identified as SI Prafulla Gogoi, constable T Marak and constable A Marak. The two civilians killed in the incident were the driver and handiman of the truck. Senior police officials and additional force have been rushed to the spot but sources said ?The ultras must have escaped into Bangladesh immediately after committing the crime.?
