Area under notified forests in Assam decreasing

Timber smuggler held, 2 elephants seized

GUWAHATI, June 2 : A team of Assam Forest Protection Force and forest staff led by South Guwahati Range Officer Dilip Kalita arrested a timber smuggler Md Chiraj Ali and seized two elephants while they were being engaged in pulling smuggled logs at Kayempathar area along Assam-Meghalaya border on May 31. A mahout and a mohori too have been nabbed along with the elephants. 229 houses demolished in Kalapahar area

GUWAHATI, June 1? In continuing with its eviction drive, the State Forest Department demolished 229 houses in the South Kalapahar Reserve Forest (RF) area of the city today and freed 37 hectares of land from encroachment. Yesterday, 204 houses were demolished in the same RF area and a land area of 25 hectares was freed from encroachment by the Department. The RF has a total land area of 70 hectares. The Department used one elephant and two bulldozers yesterday and three elephants and three bulldozers today. The eviction party was divided into three teams on both the days.

Eviction drive in Kaziranga

GUWAHATI, May 29 ? Authorities of Kaziranga National Park (KNP) started eviction drive to root out encroachers from the park as part of the statewide drive launched by the Forest Department in compliance with Supreme Court directive. Sources in KNP informed that the eviction drive was launched in the sixth addition of the National Park since yesterday in Maite and Keteng chaporis (riverine landmass) and so far 24 cattleshed have been evicted. State Forest Department has cleared about 2000 hectares of forest land in and around Guwahati in addition of large areas cleared of encroachers in the rest of the State in the on-going eviction drive launched on May 7 last.
