GUWAHATI, Jan 3 — The new year will see a major boost in television services in the North East as national broadcaster Doordarshan (DD) has embarked on a massive service expansion programme in the region. DD Director General SY Quraishi announced this evening that DD will observe the next financial year as the ‘Year of the North East’.

KOLKATA, Dec 28 – Doordarshan is planning to introduce direct-to-home telecast of its programmes in the North-east while strengthening its marketing network to earn higher advertisement revenues commensurate with its nationwide reach, reports PTI. The national broadcaster would introduce DTH telecast through KU band in eight states, including Sikkim, in the region, Doordarshan director-general SY Quraishi told reporters here today. “Work has started at 160 villages selected for the purpose. GUWAHATI, April 29: The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India, during 2000-2001, had allocated an amount of Rs 31.30 crore for expansion of Doordarshan coverage in the Northeast region. In addition, an amount of Rs 4.20 crore was provided from the non-lapsable central pool of resources in the Northeast. At present, 15 transmitters for expansion of primary channel (DD-1) and 5 transmitters for expansion of Metro channel (DD-II) are under implementation in the region, states a PIB release.
