IMPHAL, Jan 21 ? The oldest regional political party in Manipur, Manipur Peoples? Party (mpp) and ruling Secular Progressive Front (spf) alliance partner Democratic Peoples? Party (dpp) have cautioned the Government of India against adopting measures detrimental to the interests of the people of Manipur.
MPP president and Opposition leader O Joy Singh and party leader Dr Nimaichand Luwang, addressing media-persons at the party office on Monday, said the Centre should accord maximum respect to the State Assembly resolution on territorial integrity of Manipur.
Stating that in a democratic country, resolutions passed by the Assembly should not be ignored and should instead be accorded highest esteem, the two leaders said no attempt should be made to distort the State boundary as a fallout of the peace talks between Government of India and the NSCN (IM). They also reiterated that the territory of Manipur should be safeguarded by all the communities living together for ages and called upon the people to refrain from making derogatory remarks against other communities while protesting the policies of the Centrel.
On the other hand, DPP president Khaidem Mani demanded immediate dropping of any agenda that is likely to pose a threat to the territorial integrity of Manipur during the talks between the Centre and the NSCN (IM). A decision to this effect was taken after a discussion by party?s central committee, he said. People should also be consulted if the Centre decides to impose President's Rule in the State, the DPP leader demanded.
On the campaign to protect the territory of Manipur, Mani said all organisations should pursue a common agenda and desist from making communal remarks against others. He also strongly condemned the destruction of Gaan-Ngai gate at Sawombung by some miscreants and appealed to all concerned not to repeat such acts that could hamper cordial relations amongst the different communities.
