IMPHAL, Jan 23 ? A huge rally across Tamenglong district of Manipur would be taken out tomorrow to protest against the proposed construction of multi-crore Tipaimukh dam at the trijunction of Manipur, Mizoram and Assam, Committee Against Tipaimukh Dam (CATD) said today, reports PTI.
The CATD said in a statement that rally, public meetings and processions would be organised in the district to protest against the proposed dam for which a memorandum of understanding had been signed by the Manipur Government and North Eastern Electrical Power Corporation recently.
In another statement, Zeliangrong Students Union Manipur (ZSUM) said they were strongly opposed to the construction of the dam and appealed to the Government to withdraw its stand. A ZSUM statement said construction of a dam would destroy not only several villages in Zeliangrong but also its age-old historical places which would be submerged by the dam. The dam is to be constructed on Barak river at Tipaimukh area in South-west Manipur which borders Mizoram and Assam, official sources said.
