Phralung Buddhists seek reserved seats

GUWAHATI, August 7: The Phralung Buddhist Tribal Youths' Organisation has chalked out a 10-point programme for the uplift of the Phralung Buddhist community of Assam. The organisation was set up on December 2, 1998 on the occasion of the 770th foundation anniversary of Assam with its headquarters at the Patsako Central Thai Academy in Sibsagar district. Manipur moves SC over Bishnupriyas

DELHI, August 1: The Manipur government has moved the Supreme Court detailing the differences between Bishnupriyas and Manipuris over the recognition of Bishnupriyas as Other Backward Classes (OBCs) by the states of Assam and Tripura. The Manipur government has challenged the decision of the Guwahati High Court to include Bishnupriya Manipuris in the State list of OBCs saying the court has given the direction without going into the question whether such a community existed at all. NHRC to recommend Dr Baruah's case to full bench

NEW DELHI, July 28: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has decided to refer the complaint lodged by Dr Dhani Ram Baruah to the full bench of the Commission. The controversial surgeon who was in the news for transplanting a pig heart into a human being had filed a complaint with the NHRC alleging human rights violation by the Assam government. The commission had since heard the representatives of the two sides and reserved its order.

Yamin Hazarika dies at 43

NEW DELHI, July 24: Yamin Hazarika, deputy commissioner of police (crime against women), known for her impeccable track record in the force, including a three-month stint in Bosnia, died on July 24. She was 43. Hazarika, the first women from Assam to have cleared the police service exams, is survived by her 13-year-old daughter and her son, aged nine. It was in Bosnia, where she was posted as part of the UN peacekeeping force, that she was found to be suffering from leukaemia.
