Staff face nexus charge in Meghalaya

Shillong, June 10: Police in Meghalaya are homing in on a nexus between state employees and the banned Hynniewtrep Nationalist Liberation Council. An ensuing probe could result in several heads rolling.

Over 20 government officials in Meghalaya have come under the police?s scanner for allegedly providing ?accounts-related information? of government departments to the outfit.

The Meghalaya home department is contemplating ?serious action? against some high-ranking officials of the PHE department for passing ?vital information? about the department?s activities to the rebel outfit. State home minister R.G. Lyngdoh said a probe would be initiated and action taken depending on the cases against government officials and as well as some businessmen who have promoted the HNLC.

Superintendent of police, East Khasi Hills, I. Nongrang, told a news conference today that official information leaked out to the outfit by PHE officials relate to bills and payments made to a private company engaged in constructing the multicrore Greater Shillong Water Supply Scheme dam at Mawphlang.

A couple of years ago, the firm had complained that it was receiving threats and demand notes from the HNLC, which forced it to stall construction.

Nongrang said that the police were in possession of documents and receipts passed on to the HNLC in the past few years. These were confiscated from the house of one Jonhson Lyngdoh Pyngrope alias Iada at Nongkrem. Iada had been arrested along with the finance secretary of the HNLC, Fullstar Rani alias Roit, on Saturday from Nongrim hills.

The police officer said 20 other officials belonging to various government departments like the PWD and the municipality had been summoned to her office. Some prominent businessmen who had contributed to the HNLC?s coffers have been asked to report to their respective police stations.

The police are also in possession of extortion receipts from wine stores and other business establishments provided by the HNLC.
