Tripura tourism scene worsens

Agartala, Dec. 9: The tourism sector in Tripura has been hit by two unfavourable developments. The income of Comilla View, a tourist lodge in the Kasba area of West Tripura, plummeted after secretary of the department of tourism D.K. Chakraborty banned the system of spot booking at the lodge.

The lodge used to earn around Rs 50,000 per month. However, their income plunged after Chakraborty passed an order banning spot booking and consumption of liquor in the lodge.

This was done following a dispute with a nearby restaurant, run by a group of local leaders. Police intervened and arrested a couple from the lodge.

Chakraborty also directed the lodge staff to inquire if the couples staying at the lodge were married.

Aftre the ban, the lodge?s revenue of Rs 43,000 in August this year plummeted to only Rs 800.

In another blow to tourism in the state the police authority have directed the staff of Pantha Niwas, a tourist spot in North Tripura located at Kumarghat under Kailasahar subdivision, to leave as it would be used by DIG (range) Madan Mohan as his office.

Official sources in the tourism department here admitted that they had received a notice to vacate the premise but refused to comment
