NEEPCO working for timely completion of projects

SHILLONG, April 2 — The North Eastern Electric Power Corporation (NEEPCO) Ltd, a Central public sector undertaking headquartered in Meghalaya, was working towards timely completion of ongoing projects, its chairman-cum-managing director S Sharma has said, reports PTI. Addressing an annual general meeting of the association of engineers here on Saturday last, Sharma expressed hope that the Corporation would take up more projects to solve the unemployment problem in the region.

Sudden death of tortoises has Tripura’s temple town in bind

UDAIPUR (South Tripura), April 2 – Sudden death of tortoises in the lake of Tripureswari Kalibari, one of the 52 pilgrimage centres that embodies the spirit of ‘Shakti”, has become a cause of anxiety for the local authorities here, reports PTI.

South Tripura’s District Magistrate M Nagaraju, who is the temple’s ex-officio principal sevait, said since January last ten tortoises have died in the lake.

“Initially, we thought it was due to contamination but upon testing of the water nothing of that kind was detected,” he said.

Fisheries Minister Legi dropped by Mithi

ITANAGAR, April 2 – Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Mukut Mithi has dropped the Minister of State for Fisheries, Relief and Rehabilitation Lichi Legi from his Council of Ministers, reports PTI.

“The Governor, Arvind Dave, has withdraws his pleasure in respect of Legi holding the office of Minister of State with immediate effect on the advice of the Chief Minister,” an official notification said here Sunday.

The Fisheries portfolio has been allocated to Cabinet Minister Kahfa Bengia in addition to his Trade and Commerce portfolio, said a separate notification.

Centre releases Rs 29 cr for floods in Assam

NEW DELHI, April 2 – Floods may be knocking on the doors but the ministries concerned with the flood control works are locked in a bitter war of words over allocation of funds. The Central Government has released Rs 29 crore to Assam from the Non-Lapsable Pool of Central Resources during 2002-2003, Union Ministry of Water Resources today clarified.

GUWAHATI, April 2 – Three witnesses including BBC East India Correspondent Subir Bhowmik were today produced at the ad-hoc sessions court of Justice P K Phukan in connection with the killing of AVARD NE chief Sanjay Ghosh at the hands of the ULFA. The other two witnesses were Jagat Rajkhowa and Kamal Hazarika, both residents of Majuli. The next hearing of the witnesses will take place tomorrow.
