Mizos celebrate 'Chapchar Kut'

AIZAWL, March 10: Exuberant dancers performed to the tune of traditional music as Mizos all over the world celebrated 'Chapchar Kut' or 'summer festival' on Friday, reports PTI. In Aizawl, the 'Kut' function was held at the Assam Rifles ground where Art and Culture Minister Aichhinga who was named as 'Kut Pa' or 'Father of the Festival' appealed to the people to protect the customs and traditions of the ethnic Mizos. Former Mizoram RS member passes away

AIZAWL, July 27: The first chief executive member of the erstwhile Lushai hills district of Assam (now Mizoram) and former Rajya Sabha member, Lalsawia, died of blood sugar on Monday, family sources said. Lalsawia, who was 80, leaves behind his wife, one son and four daughters. A prominent leader of the Mizo Union, the first Mizo political party, Lalsawia later took over as the vice-president of the Mizoram Pradesh Congress Committee after his party merged with Congress in 1972. 32000 families below poverty line in Mizoram

AIZAWL, July 22: Over 32,000 families in Mizoram were identified as living below poverty line, the state food and civil supplies minister Aichhinga said on Wednesday. Altogether 2,455 families of the 32,555 families were living in the state capital alone, he told the House in a written reply. The families living below poverty line would be given ration through the public distribution system (PDS) at half the retail price, he said.
