Reangs demand recognition of language

Agartala, June 6: The Reangs, second largest tribal group in Tripura, are demanding formal recognition of their language Kai Bru as separate from Kokborok, the mainstream tribal language of the state.

Several seminars and meetings have been held in the Reang-dominated areas of Kanchanpur in North Tripura and Shantir Bazar in South Tripura to press for the demand. A Reang-dominated outfit, Bru National Renaissance Organisation (BNRO), is spearheading the struggle for recognition of Kai Bru. However, the Tripuri, Jamatya, Noatia and other tribal groups have opposed the demand.

Tripura film bags first prize in international fest

AGARTALA, May 30 ? A feature film in Tripura?s tribal language (Kokborak), Mathia, has been awarded the first prize in the feature film category at the 18th International Film Festival held in Warsaw from May 19 to May 25, the director of the film Joseph Pulinthanath said here on Thursday.

Polish award for Kokborok film

Agartala, May 28: Mathia, a film directed by Catholic priest Joseph Pulinthanath in the tribal Kokborok language, has bagged the best feature film award at the international film festival held in Warsaw from May 19 to 25.

The film is based on the prevalent custom of witch-killing in Tripura?s tribal community. Zygmunt, chief organiser of the festival, conveyed the news in a message to Sampari Pictures of Bishramganj in Bishalgarh subdivision yesterday.

Chakma king recounts tales of royal past

Agartala, April 16: He is the “son of a coronated king”, to say the least, but in Bangladesh, he is known only as chief of his tribal subjects, the Chakmas.

A successful lawyer in the Bangladesh supreme court, 39-year-old Raja Debasish Roy feels in a modern democracy the title of a king is redundant.

Tripura or Twipra, that's the question

Agartala, Jan. 1: If Bombay can become Mumbai and Madras renamed Chennai, why can’t Tripura be called “Twipra?” A million-rupee question, but being raised in the state by several organisations, led by the Indigenous Nationalist Party of Tripura (INPT). Their argument: The renaming of Tripura to “Twipra” is a must for conformity with the tribal Kokborok language and its phonetics.

AGARTALA, Dec 22 – Tripura has recorded satisfactory rate in disposing of consumer related cases under the Consumer Protection Act, 1986. There are four courts in the state- State Commission, Agartala nd three district fora of North, West and South Tripura districts- that look into the consumer rights protion. Accreditaton to 3 NE universities

GUWAHATI, May 27 ? The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), an autonomous institution of the University Grants Commission, accredited three universities of the north-eastern region on May 15. These are Dibrugarh University, Tripura University and Arunachal University, a PIB release today said. Dibrugarh and Arunachal universities have been graded ?B? under the new grading pattern and Tripura University has been conferred with a C+ grading.
