Hunt for history’s hidden treasures

New Delhi, June 23: A campaign is under way to save the Northeast’s hoary past for the future. The National Mission for Manuscripts has launched a comprehensive search for priceless manuscripts containing little-known nuggets from the region’s history. These documents will be preserved for posterity in a scientific manner and made available to researchers.

Set up last year under the Union culture ministry, the mission intends to first preserve and then catalogue valuable historical documents that could be lying in temples, libraries and museums.

Dispur approves three new sanctuaries

Guwahati, June 23: The state government has agreed to the formation of three new wildlife sanctuaries to bring more forest areas under government protection. The decision has been taken despite the fact that the government is facing funds and manpower shortage. Addressing a press conference today, forest minister Pradyut Bordoloi said the government has issued final notification to three new wildlife sanctuaries — Amsang, Barail and Dihing Patkai. The total area under the three sanctuaries is 516 square km.

Muktieh new Dy Speaker of Meghalaya House

SHILLONG, June 23 – Meghalaya Assembly Wednesday elected unopposed senior Congress member Phing Well Muktieh as its Deputy Speaker, a post lying vacant since elections in the State during early 2003, reports PTI.

Muktieh, the Soil Conservation minister, representing Mawhati (ST) constituency, was declared elected by Speaker Martin M Danggo in the assembly.
