Central aid for Reang refugees

AGARTALA, May 26 ? Central Government has extended a financial help of Rs 10.99 crore in the last financial year for the displaced Reang refugees presently sheltered in six camps at Kanchanpur.

The Reangs had come to North Tripura from adjacent Mizoram following fierce ethnic conflict between the Bru (Reang) and Lushai (Mizo) communities in October 1997. The exodus from Mizoram began on the night of October 15 and in phases the Reangs under constant threat and persecution from the majority community poured in the North district.

Insurgency on the rise in Tripura

AGARTALA, May 26 ? Denying the Chief Minister Manik Sarkar?s peace call, the outlawed militant outfits of Tripura have intensified violence, which has shown a sharp rise in the State compared to the past two years.

The insurgency related incidents have already claimed 123 civil lives after Manik Sarkar-led fifth Left Front government assumed office for the second time in February last. 5 Nagaland policemen held for smuggling

The Forest staff and Home Guards under Manja Forest Range office have arrested five Nagalanad police personnel for illegally carrying two trucks of teak wood valued at over Rs 4 lakh around 3.30 am today. Rs 36 cr for AIDS control in NE

GUWAHATI, May 26 ? The National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO) has sanctioned Rs 36.55 crore for the north-eastern States for the session 2003-04 to fight the onslaught of the dreaded disease. Revealing this at a workshop on AIDS today, NACO project director Meenakshi Datta Ghosh said the targeted areas for utilisation of the amount are interventions, prevention interventions, low-cost AIDS care, institutional strengthening and inter-sectoral collaboration, with an increase of 20 per cent over the previous year allocation.
