KAAC chairman's house attacked

DIPHU, February 25: The chairman of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council, Daniel Teron's house was attacked by suspected militants of the United Peoples' Democratic Solidarity last night, official sources said here. A group of about 10 to 12 militants came last night to Teron's house and opened indiscriminate firing. Teron, who was inside the house, and other family members were not injured, but the house suffered partial damage. Security has been strengthened around Teron's house and the police has launched a massive combing operation in the area to nab the militants, the sources said.

NE truce extension under consideration

KOHIMA, February 25: The Centre was actively considering Nagaland government's proposal to declare ceasefire with three other underground groups and a suggestion to extend the ceasefire to other areas in the Northeast, Union Home Minister L K Advani said today, reports PTI. AR refuses to hand over BNLF chief

AIZAWL, February 25: Assam Rifles authorities in Tripura's Kanchanpur refused to hand over Bru National Liberation Front (BNLF) leaders, who escaped from the clutches of National Liberation Front of Twipra (NLFT) and surrendered to the Assam Rifles about a month back, police said. Top Mamit district police officials told PTI over phone that they had been urging the Assam Rifles authorities in Kanchanpur to hand over Surjo Moni and Hmunsiama, president and deputy commander respectively of the BNLF, to the Mizoram police.

Laishom killings: HC asks Govt to pay compensation

IMPHAL, February 25: The Gauhati High Court (Imphal Bench) has ordered the State authority to pay a sum of Rs 1 lakh each as ex gratia of two widows, whose husbands were shot dead by 8 Assam Rifles during counter-insurgency operations at Laishoim lake in Bishnupur district in March last year. Justice N Surjamani asked the Government to hand over the amount directly to the widows within one week, failing which legal action would be followed, a legal source said.
